To get to the Palais Universitaire conference centre from the railway station, you can take the tram C (every 5 minutes) to the “Gallia” stop, then just walk a couple of minutes to the Palais Universitaire (blue dotted line on the map below).  

Alternatively it's a 15-20 minute walk through the city centre.
